Hand Sanitizers Sales Continue to Climb

HandSanitizerIt’s not uncommon these days to hear of a new virus outbreak or communicable illness. Even with the potential unhealthy bacteria on public surfaces, it is not feasible to live in a sterile environmentĀ for the rest of your life. According to Kline, a global market research firm, the use of hand sanitizers and related products areĀ on the rise due to high-profile breakouts. According to their reports, overall sales of these hand-care products are expected to grow 4% per year through 2020. The Kline report continues stating that thanks to the convenience offered by instant hand sanitizers, they have a higher growth rate of 5% annually.

These findings are reflected by the product trends witnessed by industry suppliers. They have seen an increased interest in hand sanitizer sprays that can be easily stored in the office, in purses, or even clothing pockets. The cold and flu season only increases the consumer awareness of these items.

Hand sanitizer requests increased 53% from 2013 to 2015.

It should be no surprise that hospitalsĀ invest in hand hygiene products. According to Kline, sales of professional-use hand-care products for the industrial and institutional markets grew to nearly $1.5 billion last year, an increase of 3.6%. The hand-care products sales were much higher than other professional-grade chemicals, such as floor and hard-surface cleaners. Food service and janitorial industries are also high growth markets for hand-care products.

Is there a health benefit to using hand sanitizers? Yes. According to a 2014 study, office workers who used alcohol-based hand sanitizers five times a day were 66% less likely to get sick and families that used them hadĀ “60% fewer gastrointestinal infections over the next five months”Ā (Berkeley Wellness, 2014).
